Tips for beginners / Re: I get very nervous when speaking...

Hi Steph!
A quarter of the oxygen you breath in goes to your brains. When you get  nervous you tend to breath in less. Start breathing in deeply 5 min. before your speech. Now your brain can't go on lock down.
try it out!
Bylaws, Policies and Procedures / Geographical restrictions on Divisions & Districts
« Last post by Timm on September 16, 2016, 04:41:41 AM »
Phew, what an impressive document! I've only had a chance to read through the first few articles and I have a question regarding 11.3:

What's the motivation behind restricting a Division to a country and a District to at least one country but no more than a continent?

I can think of a few examples where this might lead to administrative difficulties:
  • For small countries like Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Monaco it may not be worthwhile to maintain a Division for only one club or very few clubs
  • Many countries belong to more than one continent (e.g. Russia, Turkey, France), therefore the current wording of 11.3 causes a conflict.
  • Very large countries or countries with very many clubs may benefit from splitting into more than one District.
Speech Structure / Visual Aids

As a long time speaker I have also attended many meetings with other speakers.  One of their major faults was the use of power point projections.  When the complete power point is viewed the audience is reading the points and NOT listening to you the speaker.  This can be corrected with a projector that will only show one point at a time.
Educational Program Development / Re: Speech Project Writing Competition
« Last post by Timm on September 11, 2016, 06:09:55 AM »
I like the idea, in particular I support that
  • All contributions must be CC-BY-NC-SA-licensed
I'm wondering what's the best way for composing a final version of a project guide.
  • If there is more than one submission to a writing contest, then one generally superb contribution might miss out one aspect that is very well written in another. Most likely, a combo version would be ideal to comprise all the strengths of each individual submission.
  • A wiki-style collaboration could exploit different contributors' perspectives and ideas right from the start. However, I also see a risk that piecemeal development might just result an unfocused piece of writing, instead of a speech project guide. If contributors share their ideas in a video conference first, agree on an outline and assign tasks, that might be a more promising approach.
BTW what's the projected time frame for creating these materials for the different stages of the educational programme?
Website issues and suggestions / Website layout

Whoever designed the current landing page at what an excellent job you've done! The layout is very clean and looks highly professional. The promising content is also presented very clearly and in a manner that attracted and held my attention.

Another thing that immediately struck my eye is that the text and graphics are currently 100% male  :)
  • The logo shows a male speaker
  • The photo in the "confidence transformation" header shows a male person
  • Some role titles sound very male as well
I reckon that we don't intend to stick to the male-only tradition of Ancient Greece! May I suggest to
  • add some photos of females as well or even make the person in the logo gender-neutral?
  • on the club experience website, change "him" to "them" and "Hot Questions Master" to "Hot Questions Chair" or "Hot Questions Facilitator"? Oh, and are speakers really supposed to be "victims"? ;) I imagine that most readers would not understand that this is meant ironically, which I presume it is.
The Job Interview / Re: Job Interview

The Job Interview project was actually moved to a more specific branch since, as you say, many people don't have that need.
Educational Program Development / Re: Suggestions for better evaluations

A copy and paste from the facebook  group of Agora Speakers on lengthy and detailed evaluation:

Some people are inclined to learn more and some want to give more feedback. Why not have a separate role called speech analyser for this purpose. This could be an experienced member who has completed the basic level and who can completely analyse a speech by looking at it objectively from various angles, provide suggestions on improvement, enact/deliver some of them so that not only the speaker, but also the audience benefits. The regular speech Evaluator will have 2-3 minutes time limit where as the speech analyser can have 5-7 minutes time
The Job Interview / Re: Job Interview

I'm 66 years old. Retired and might consider some part time little job. However, in my life time I have been interviewed in job interviews many times. Most of them were successful. I am not interested in learning how to do something that I am already good at but have no need of just as I am not interested in the television station role play etc.. Might be one of those Life Experience or REP as stated by one member in his post that live expierence is given credit for already having been accomplished.
